Cyber Security & Infrastructure Engineer

We are looking for a dependable colleague with advanced problem-solving skills for the position of Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Engineer at Reederei NORD B.V. in Amsterdam. You will have the exciting opportunity to have an impact by enhancing the current cybersecurity level and improving the fleet and shore IT infrastructure. You will provide active IT support to Reederei NORD Group’s fleet while working for Reederei NORD B.V. in the Amsterdam office. You will be part of the international and experienced IT team that currently consists of the IT Director, two IT Fleet Support Engineers, and an IT Systems Administrator.

It is a full-time position, you will report directly to the IT Director and you will travel to ships a few weeks per year to maintain IT systems on board Company and third-party client ships. The systems that we work with are Fortinet network equipment, Dell, HP servers, and satellite equipment (JRC, Sailor, Furuno, and Intellian).

Key Responsibilities

You will have the exciting opportunity to be responsible for:

Cyber Security (Shore and fleet):

  • Updating, improving, promoting, and enforcing IT Policies and Procedures in the Amsterdam office (thirty-six skilled colleagues) and fleet (hundreds of competent seafarers onboard the thirty-five ships);
  • Network Security (including firewalls, VPNs, IPS/IDS, DNS/Web filtering), Network Segmentation and Management (VLANs, STP), Endpoint Security (Antiviruses, EDR), Threat Management, and Vulnerabilities and Patch Management;
  • Red and blue teaming, security and risks assessments, awareness trainings, incident investigations, reviews, and reports;
  • Periodical reviews and office and fleet networks.

Infrastructure:

Shore:

  • Reviewing and improving networks;
  • Remaining up to date about the latest trends and implementing some of them;
  • Supporting the IT Administrator in maintaining the office network and virtualization platform.

Fleet:

  • Providing day-to-day IT support to ships through remote access and communication;
  • Maintaining and expanding in-house cybersecurity solutions for the fleet;
  • Initiating and executing infrastructure and cybersecurity IT projects;
  • Maintaining the IT equipment of ships mainly remotely and occasionally also on-site including routine installations, configurations, upgrades, antivirus protection, backups, and email operation;
  • Liaising with suppliers and service providers to resolve issues optimally.

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of network security;
  • Knowledge of and experience with VMware ESXi and vCenter;
  • Knowledge of Ethernet, LAN / WAN / SDWAN, Firewalls, Routers, Backup systems, Windows operating systems, AD, Mail-server, DNS, and DHCP;
  • Excellent skills: analysing, problem-solving, and fault-finding;
  • Good skills: time management, record-keeping, the English language, and communication. You can effectively and positively assist and instruct internal and external customers and (non-technical) colleagues ashore and onboard on IT-related matters;
  • Attitude: Inquisitive and enthusiastic to support colleagues in learning from mistakes and improving processes. Learner mentality. Strong desire to do impactful work and the diligence to follow through to reach goals;
  • Able to: thrive both in teams and independently, thrive in a multicultural environment, and to study and implement new technologies;
  • Experience in a similar position in IT;
  • It is not a must but an advantage if you have a university degree in computer science, are familiar with Fortinet equipment, Python, Linux, VoIP, satellite communication (VSAT / FBB / Certus), have worked in the maritime industry, and have knowledge and experience with LXC/Docker/Kubernetes and Proxmox/Hyper-V or other virtualization platforms.
